Win 2K Users: Spill your thoughts about this OS!

What's so great about this OS? I'm currently using Win98SE on one partition of my HD, and I'm currently thinking about installing Win2K on the other partition. What is so great about this OS? I've heard things here and there, but just want to know what you guys think. Is it faster? (boot-times, shut-down, general usage). Gaming I know is not so great. Also, should I keep my second partition as Fat32? Or, should I just install win2k as my main OS and use NTFS? Thanks in advance dudes and dudettes.

I just got installed it on my server today. To my surprise I really like it. I love the network utilities (for installing and configuring LAN/dialup). Now, I am going to add it to my primary PC under dual operating system with win 98. I have yet to really put much time playing around with it, but I am impressed with it. I can't wait to get it on my PC cause win 98 stinks at managing my ram. Oh, and for some reason there seems to be less "hang ups and lags" when running it. Like going thru network neighborhood or explorer... or just hitting the start button.

went from Windows ME to Windows 2000 on my main machine last week. (have been using 2000 on Celeron 2 system since it was built though) and to my suprise everything went super well. No crashes at all since I installed it. I used to crash at least once a day in Windows ME if ME decided to work right to start with.

I'm dual booting 98SE and W2k SP1. I've tweaked and tweaked both OSs trying to wring every bit out of them.....I ran W2k for 3 months and never booted into 98..then used 98 and never used W2K. Both Fat32 btw.

On my comp I thing 98 is faster, snappier, and get this....every bit as stable as W2K without all the glitches associated with installing programs/games adapted to W2k and not neccessarily written for it.

Both OSs have their strong points, but on my comp I see little reason to 'upgrade' from 98SE to W2K. I've got and paid for both OSs as I started with a BP6 running SMP and then their is a large difference in usability.

Imho, W2K is neat, and if you must try it, go ahead. The differences will be small. Do not expect it to solve any problems with your hardware! I can guess that some expect the word 'stable' to solve everything. In fact, W2K is VERY picky about nearly everything.

one word STABILITY
Just about every game runs on win2k , some need a little more tweak than others.
Also having plenty of ram is really benficial to win2k and uses it better and more resourcefully than win9x.

so far not so good here. installed 2Kpro here. runnin a dual boot 98se and 2Kpro

so far I cant find all the drivers I need and I can get 2k to power done at all!!!!! im seriously srtessin here. think my MX300 is the cause for the 2k lockups. it seems not to want to play sound. I think thats why it will not exit out of 2k

It rocks. Stability and advanced security features make it the best OS out there for a user like me - I like Linux, but don't want to sacrifice losing so many applications. You get stability, great memory management, all in an easy to use interface.

I really loved it till two days ago when my computer crashed with a message while booting: Missing Corrupt in \WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMced. Ran great 4 months prior to this! I just now finished reinstalling windows 2000 and will try one more time. But Im Ghosting my H/D on a spare this time for backup. This is a know problem for some people and I wouldnt of believed it till now, because it just happened to me out of NO were!

Relates to the 2mb write cache on the disk being unable to write its contents to the disk before ACPI pulls the power on the hardware, causing corruption to windows registry data. Basically the machine is too fast as the cpu finishes the shutdown procedure before the harddrive can flush the contents of its writeback cache to the hard disk.

I cant find a fix for this for Windows 2000 on microsofts website, only for Windows 98.

As you can see I reinstalled it again knowing this problem so you must know I like it. 🙂 But also ghosting and looking for a fix also!

Good Luck!

Buckmaster i too have had this prob quite a few times and have always had to either format or re-install.so far everything seems ok for the last few months 🙂

Buckmaster,

Had the same problem. Cure was to reinstall and NOT use v1426 of Via's 4in1 drivers (v1426 has actually been pulled from their site because of problems)...the IDE driver causes this problem...use v1425 and it will fix it.

Not sure if your problem is that, but you may want to look into it.

W2k is awesome. It beats the hell outta win98 in terms of stability. I think it is easier to use also. As for games I haven't run into a problem yet. Some of my games work better in w2k. If you use it you won't go back. I'd would load it up with FAT32.

I build and support systems at work and Win 2K is definitely both more stable and secure. The PnP is good and driver support, at least for my needs, has been more than adequate. However, I can't vouch for it's performance with games, as I'm not much of a gamer. I have been pleasantly surprised with Win 2K.

Dennis I think I did have those 4-1 drivers installed to just before the crash now that you brought it up! I'll have to double check when I get home later.

Thanks!

here is a follow up. I just removed win2k NO modem drivers. no sound card drivers. no scanner.

Also no shutting down in 2k.

now i keep getting prompted to boot to 2k at startup? any indes on how to disable this?

Windows 2000 Professional is an excellent operating system for the above average user.
Pretty much all the abilities added to WinME are there if you bother to look for them.
Win2k is rock solid. I have one machine that has never been rebooted since it was installed months ago. If something hangs up you just kill the process and Win2k is back to normal.

I will say this:

Research all of your components for compatibility with Windows 2000. Some 3rd tier component manufacturers never bothered to update drivers for Win2k, even some reasonably good brands. If there aren't explicit Win2k drivers for your hardware, replace it before installing.

For hardcore FPS gaming a tweaked Win98SE installation will probably serve you better. Drivers for Win9x are more mature and faster. Personally I run mainly Win2k on all my rigs with a couple of Win98SE and 1 WinME. The WinME was simply for an experiment. I am generally happy with it, but I am still not sure why I spent the $50. Installing the latest Windows Media Player seems to give most of the same multimedia features, and Win98SE was already pretty good about networking.

If you have a home LAN even Win2k professional gives you features that are great to have, BuiltIn WWW, FTP, SMTP, the ability to route any Internet connection to the local LAN *EASILY*

If you are truly a speedfreak use 98Lite the custom windows installation on your gaming rig. You'll see gains of 10-15% more overall performance.

My $1.25 like it or not.

ok here is my 2 cents...

I initially installed W2k Pro Beta release on my P2-333 w/ 128 running SCSI drives. I had removed NT 4.0 and did a clean install. I noticed that it ran REALLY Slow compared w/ NT 4.0 so within 6 hrs or so, I was back to NT 4.0. I decided to wait for final release.

few months goes by. Now I'm using P3-1G w/ 128 Rambus. removed my NT 4.0, and installed final release of W2K Pro. It still runs substantially slower than NT 4.0 workstation. But final release w/ SP1 seems to be running fairly stable. Past two weeks, I had to reboot my computer once, and I think it was due to MSN explorer my girlfriend installed(forgot to remove some permissions...). But considering that the system stays up 24/7, Win2k pro seems to be holding up pretty good...

Thats cause win2k is just dying for more memory man. I recently upgraded my main( READ ONLY 😛 ) box with whistler onn it to 256MB, and it bloody well near took off 🙂
