Win 2k Sp1 0XC0000218 Registry File Failure (please see text)

I get a sporadic nasty message at startup (WIN 2k sp1- MSI k7t turbo - Duron 850 @850 - 256 Mb Apacer 133 - Maxtor 10 Gb Iomega CDRW 8-4-32)
It reads:

C0000218 {Regidtry File failure}
The system can not load the hive (file):
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\Software
or its log or alternate
It is corrupt, absent or not workable

I saw it happening mostly when I changed something in CMOS setup.
Any idea about what could be causing it??

I just started up my Win2k and got close to the same error (mine said STOP: C0000218 and then is exactly the same). Did you manage to fix it? If so, how? I think mine was caused when I installed Partition Magic.
