Win 2k Service Pack 2 and my weird experiences.

I find that every time I update my Win2k to service pack 2 it bloats up for one thing, but it also feels slower and less stable. Maybe I need to stay away from the crack pipe for a while? I have noticed this everytime I reinstall Win 2k (every 6 months).

BTW the Office 2000 service pack killed my computer once (freezes, crashes etc.) and I never installed it again.

Am I the only one with this problem? Or is it just my perception?

Service Pack 2 does have some issues for me. One, for instance, was a DNS update issue at login. Fixed it.

As far as bloat goes, I didn't run into that prob. Nor the Office 2000 prob. My server is a dual P3 800 with 1gb ram. Maybe more memory would help?

Thanks for the reply! You have nice machine there. I have only 256MB RAM, when I bought my machine mid last year I really thought that it would be enough. The most intensive thing I do is play a game every now and then. I don't playing a DVD is intensive on either memory or CPU on a modern machine. I don't know, it seems like the simple act of loading an MS OS is enough to require large amounts of memory leave alone ensuring enough for applications.

I hate to ask another question, but does installing SP2 have any real advantages if one is happy with a Win2k CD install? Thanks!

Put it this way... With every service pack you install your that much more stable, and with an NT OS, secure. Yes, there are always the possibilities of the service pack creating new issues... But I've found that since there are so many IT people using 2k server someone is going to comeup with a temporary solution till MS fixes it.

Service packs usualluy fixed 10s or 100s of problems in stability and/or security... It's your choice, but I would rather install them and worry about other issues if they arise later.

The Dual P3 800 systems, I have two, were specificaly chosen to be servers. I tried using one of them with Windows XP and all I ever got was the infinite loop issues. Using a ATI RADEON 8500DV or a GEFORCE 4 ti 4600 didn't matter nor did using different drivers. So, I built a P4 1.8a system for XP and I've been happy ever since 🙂.

One last thing, I've got one computer setup with Windows 2000 Server and one with Windows 2000 Advanced Server and they both have been stable with SP2.
