I'm running terminal services on my server to negate the need for another moniter, and still be able to control the thing. I got the active directory all set up, and terminal services is running, but only at 256 colors through a remote session. Now I know that the TNT2 in it is not holding me back and neither is the GeForces in the rest of the boxes. The server however will not allow me to do anything but 256 colors. I want it to do 16bit. Does anyone have any 2000 Server experience that can help me out?

256 is the max for terminal services, but if you are just looking to control the beast and want 16 or 32 bit color, look into WinVNC. It is noticeably less responsive than TS on a LAN, but if all you need to do is configure your server, you shouldn't really need more than 256 colors. And having a TNT2 in the server doesn't matter as the hardware video subsystem in your server will have no effect on your TS sessions.

I have been using vnc for awhile, I tried terminal services yesterday after installing win2k server on a box at work. It did seem much faster than vnc over the network, anyone know how well the connection holds up over the net vs vnc?

I've never used VNC, but TS works beautifully over the NET. I'm limited to a 128kb upload on my server at home. I'm accessing my server from a 128kb ISDN at work. I access my server using a 1024x768 window. Works very well browsing through windows. Chokes on full size images. Well it could have been someone else using up the bandwidth at work that made it choke.

Terminal service is only limited to 256 colors for performace issue.
I've been using TS for a while and I think it is the best remote utility tool out there. It sure beats the crap out of PCA, VNC, Laplink, Remotely possible, Timbuktu and the others.

Akash: TS does not need licensing if it is in the remote admin mode. You only need licensing if you are running users off the TS.

TS works perfect from the internet. I've accessed my TS from france and I don't feel the lag. I am running DU meter on the TS to measure bandwitdh and it is only using ~ 1.3 kb/s

Sounds great thanks, my home is on cable with average about 1 meg/sec upload and work is on a fractional t1 so I should be good to go.

Akash:

remember not to install the annoying terminal service licensing service :)

If you've installed it, kill it and don;t let the service restart with windows.

Btw, you can also do this to windows licensing .. hehe..
