Win 2K questions - 'Preparing Network Conns' & Startup Files

When Win 2K starts up, I get the message 'Preparing Network Connections'. This takes a few moments, but then about 1 minute later an icon in the task bar for 'Network & Dialup Connections' appears. In the meantime, I can not connect to the internet through either LAN or dialup.

This has only recently started occurring. Is there any way to get rid of this and prevent Win 2K from looking for Network Connections at startup? It makes startup so slow now.

Also, is there anyway of controlling the startup applications. I used to use 'msconfig' in Win 98, but this command doesn't seem to work in Win 2k.

win2k always checks for network connections when you boot; you must not have something configured properly. right click my network places, then right click your connection. make sure that everything is set up properly. win2k is very stable and doesn't have as many bugs as win98; something is probably not set up properly. as for the startup apps, i'm not sure myself on that one, i'd like to know myself. you can always get rid of the stuff in your startup folder, other than that it's probably in the registry somewhere. can anyone help?
