I was testing some software on a 2K pro machine to make sure that it would run OK under a power users account and in doing so the user of the machine which had full admin priveleges account was changed to power user then it was changed back to admin, that is all we did. When he logged back on all of his desktop profiles wre gone and it was just like a new machine with a welcome to Windows screen and all that, the files in various directories are all there but all icons, desktop images, start menu items and My documents are gone. The proifile settings aren't such an issue but he didn't back up his "My Documents" folder on our server and has lost some important files, basically everything that was under his profile name under Documents and setting is set back to what it was when it was a fresh OS. I downloaded the Ontrack Easy Recovery trial version and ran it to try and see if the files can be recovered and it found them but rather than having to shell out $200 I wonder if any of you have any other ideas? Windows shouldn't have done this but hey it's Windows right and it has a mind of it's own sometimes.

Are you absolutely sure the files were deleted? It sounds as if Windows screwed up, and created him a new profile, rather than overwriting his prievious one.

Look in c:\Doc & Settings\ for his USERID directory. Most likely there are at least 2: one w/ a .DOMAINNAME or a .001 extension, or something like that.
