win 2k hanging at boot up

Hello all,

I am having a problem when ever I boot up my win2k pro box, it hangs at the blue screen right before it logs in. I can't tell if its a problem with the log in itslef since nothing is displayed. All it shows is the blue (default) desktop, and the mouse pointer. I am able to move the mouse around, but unable to do anything with it. also the keyboard seems to be disabled at this point, but not anytime before. The same thing happens when I try to boot up in safe mode. I have run all the win2k recovery tools that are provided on the cd, but no luck. I even tried taking the hard drive out and tried to boot it in a different computer to rule out any hardware problems, but the same thing happened.

I ran chkdsk , it said the filesystem is intact and no problems. I would like to repair this installation if possible, but not absolutly necessary. any suggestions?

Since you haven't logged in give "last known good" a shot. Sounds like a good candidate for a inplace upgrade/repair though.

Can you bring task manager up while at that screen?

Try holding down the CRTL key while Windows is booting.

It will not autologon and will instead give you the logon dialog.
(I am assuming you have it autologin)

Then you can logon as another user (more than likely a Corrupt Profile problem).

Try Debugging Mode boot to see if you can pin point the problem. If all fail, try Last Known Good Configuration. If you have ERD disk then try Recovery Console.

Thanks for all the suggestions, but all the above suggestions didn't seem to work.

the Ctrl Key didn't work
last known good didn't work
debugging mode didn't seem to do anything different.

I don't have an erd from this particular win 2k load. could I create one from another system to use on this one? if so how do i go about doing it?

You don't need an ERD to run a repair. Unlike NT, wk2/xp/2k3 don't replace your system and software hives. Just do a repair from your 2k CD then re service pack and patch when you are done.

Sounds like you computer is trying to get an IP from DHCP and the DHCP server is unavailable.

If you run ipconfig, do you have a 169.x.y.z address?

?I wish I could get that far..I couldn't even log in.

But this is all moot now. I did a win2k repair/re-install which fixed the corrupt file that was causing the problem. I am up and running now. Thanks all for the suggestions.
