win 2k, format type ? and via driver for amd ?

I got a newly built cpu a bit ago and just installed win 2k on it. (I havent even put the vid or sound card in yet) My first question is this.. when I installed win 2k it asked for a kind of format to use: a FAT and a NTSC (i think). First time I've seen these, I went to pick fat and it gave me a warning of some programs might not work with it... so I tried ntsc and it didn't give any warnings. Will either of these types have any effect in the future? Ie installing things or games?

Also I have an AMD 1.2 ghz, I've heard of a problem with graphics cards due to the south board something. I've read that you can get the via 4 in 1 update. My question is this: Do I need this or is the problem for older chips? Also if I do, where should I get it?

Thanks for the help guys.

It really shouldn't matter which file system you choose for normal everyday use. NTFS offers some more security features and quota management and things like that. One feature of NTFS that I do use is file indexing which allows for very fast file searches.

One of the drawbacks of NTFS is that its file system can NOT be read by any Win95/98/ME operating system. Even the bootdisks you create in those OS's will not be able to read an NTFS file system. But this shouldn't be a problem unless you're dual booting with one of the aforementioned OS's or you need to do something in a true DOS environment and need to access your hard drive.

And about your other question, after you install Win2K, the newest Service Pack 2, and the VIA 4-1 drivers (I think version 4.33 is the newest...), everything should be fast and stable. I believe the service pack and the VIA drivers address all the past bugs.

You can get the via drivers from viahardware.com.

Good luck! 🙂

[Edit] AndyHui's message wasn't there when I began typing... and I thought I had fast fingers... 🙁

thanks for the help guys. I didn't realize that the faqs had so much info. I'll definitly be checking them a lot more. One question, the service pack 2 mentioned earlier... is that from via also, or is that a fix from microsoft?

Thanks
