win 2k basic lan issues

I've got two computers joined with a crossed cable. One is win 2k pro, the other win 98se.

On the win 98se one everything works fine, and if I go into network neighbourhood I can see the other puter. BUT if I go into network neighbourhood on the win 2k pro machine it pukes and stops responding. What's going on?

The actual connection works (on IPX in tiberium sun)

Try opening up my computer and in the address bar, type "\\192.168.0.1" or whatever the IP or computer name is. Network neighborhood always has trouble in 2k. THere is a reg key you can delete to speed up the browsing:

Step 1. In Windows 2000, click Start, Run, type
regedt32, and click OK.

Step 2. In the Registry Editor, navigate to the
following branch:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current
Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace.

Step 3. Under that branch, select the key
{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}. This key
instructs Windows Explorer to search for Scheduled
Tasks. If you wish, pull down the Registry menu and
click Save Key to back up this value. Name the output
file, say, Scheduled.reg, and you can easily restore
the key if necessary.

Step 4. Delete the key and close the Registry Editor.

This change takes effect immediately and doesn't
require a reboot, so you can determine how much it
speeds up the process.

Hope that helps!

There is a known problem with Win2k and Win98 machines on its network.

When trying to asccess a win98 computer, it takes minutes for the computer to show up.

I believe there is a post on this board that points to Microsofts site with the bulletin. There's no fix I know of....

This is the fix! It speeds up network access in win2k to 98se significantly...

Step 1. In Windows 2000, click Start, Run, type
regedt32, and click OK.

Step 2. In the Registry Editor, navigate to the
following branch:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current
Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace.

Set the binding order in win2k yet? If not.....

Right click on My Network Places and select Properties. You should see a list of your connections. Go up top and select the Advanced menu (not in front of my 2k comp right now so bear with me) and then select Advanced Settings. In here you should find a tab with binding order or something else. Go there and then move your protocols up or down until you get things situated. I think they are put in there by the order you installed them, so if you installed IPX/SPX first it might be the default protocol. Put up NetBEUI or TCP/IP up there first. Also make sure you have Client for Microsoft Networks installed.
