Win 2000 & Modem Problem.

I just installed Win 2000 and for some reason although it recognizes my modem it cannot detect it. The OS found a driver for it within its database but when I try to query it says no modem is detected. I tried the troubleshooter without any luck. I also went to USR site and downloaded the latest driver. I unzipped it (after creating a USR folder) and tried removing and adding the modem with the new drivers without luck. I tried running the setup program but got the message that it needs Win NT 4.0 or higher. Suggestions on a solution?

What modem? Internal/External?

Have you tried removing all drivers/etc for it, shutting down and physically removing the modem, then rebooting without it and finally rebooting with it to get it to detect and install with latest drivers?

What do the readme files that come with the latest drivers say? Are there any specific installation instructions on USR's site?

I have a very similar problem with a USR v.90 ISA modem. One system (KT7-RAID) behaves just like you mentioned; the other (BH6) has no problem with the modem. Both running Windows 2000, both a fresh install of the os with minimal hardware installed before plugging in the modem.

strange...I haven't researched it much; have just been using the BH6 system as a ICS server, since it is the only machine with a modem!

My modem is a USR Hardware PCI Internal one. I initially tried using the drivers with Win2K. I then removed it (not physically) and tried the latest drivers from USR. The modem is recognized but when I do Query Modem the following message appears: "The modem failed to respond. Make sure it is properly connected and turned on [it is]. If it is an internal modem or is connected verify that the interrupt for the port is properly set [I have also confirmed this]". I have tried rebooting each time letting Windows 2000 recognize it but I can only do this manually in Control Panel. As to physically removing the modem, not at this point. For this last part to work should I: shut down, physically remove the modem as you suggest, boot-up without the modem, shut down again, install the modem and finally reboot? The read me files don't say much of anything and since this modem is OEM I never received any installation instructions. It works because I am currently using it on a dual boot system (Win 98 SE & Win 2000). But for some reason when I boot with W2K I have the aforementioned problem.

You may also need to go in and remove the "phantom" device drivers during that boot without the modem plugged in.

Well...I'm not a XP beta tester, but am assuming that they've carried the device manager over from W2K fairly intact...

Check the MS knowledge base article Q241257 - Device Manager Does Not Display Devices Not Currently Present in Windows 2000
(Click here) for specifics, but there is a registry value that has to get set to turn on display of some of the phantom devices, then you select View -> Show Hidden Devices from the Device Manager menu.

Hope that helps & that the methods carry over to XP.

edited: OK it's not a registry value, but an environment variable -- should have read the article better before posting. It's something I did to my W2K installs long ago...

Device Manager displays the modem I have and indicates that it is working properly but when I do Query Modem it is not detected. Recognized but Not Detected!?

It sounds like you have the 5610 or 2976/2977 USR PCI modem.

You have to install this modem in a specific way - it doesn't sound like the modem drivers are installed correctly. There is an executable (if memory serves me correctly) that will install that modem.

Hope this helps.

My modem is a 2976. Can you detail for me the "specific way" or where I can get this information? Additionally, if I have installed the modem drivers incorrectly, would you clarify for me the correct procedure?

I have been there and downloaded the file to a floppy copied it to the USR folder I created opened the file reinstalled the modem. Windows recognizes the modem but does not detect it when I do a Query. Why is that? Is it strictly driver related?
