Win 2000 AOL conflict

I recently installed windows win 2000; it runs great, except:
When I disconnect from AOL (via my ISP) and disconnect from my ISP, I cannot reconnect to my ISP.
I'm using a 56K modem. I've been doing this for years under win 98 and can't figure out what's wrong.
Specifically, the second time I try to connect to my ISP, it won't accept my passord and gives me "error 734" PPP link terminated.
I can reconnect to my ISP multiple times until I connect to AOL; that's why it must be a problem with AOL.
Can anyone help? I would hate to go back to win 98. Would win XP work? I change components a lot, so win XP would not be my first choice.

Thanks, that was a very constructive suggestion. I tried that and it didn't solve the problem. Maybe it's just "Goodby AOL."
