Win 10 - Install Now Or Wait?

My Win8.1 install has gotten very messy over time.

So I thought I would want to reinstall from scratch, but then think it's silly with Win10 around the corner.

So I thought about installing Win10...but then I think this is silly too with it being released in two months.

My main "concern"..would it run BF4 and GTA 5? I dont want to install it and then just run from one problem to the other..then I rather wait a couple of months? What you say?

(Win8.1 x64, GTX 970, i7, 16GB)

10 is in Preview. It is not ready for prime time. Install it on an extra hard drive, or put it on a virtual machine. But don't use it for the main OS. Just wait for your free upgrade from 8.1.

The latter pages of this thread have a lot of discussion about what folks are still running into with this OS:

Well after some trouble with Synaptic SB pointing drives,in build 10074 now a weak past i'm doing fine on my 2 HP DV5,and DV6,but i only browse and stream though.

I've stuck with it from the beginning and I have at times gotten very frustrated with it but it looks like it's only going to get better. C'Mon, nVidia! Your Windows 10 drivers suck...same for you RealTek.

This. It is a preview, and should not be used as a primary OS.

How did your 8.1 get really messy?..I have 8.1 on two PCs and still very stable, one was an upgrade from Win8 which was installed on the very first day when Win8 was officially released.

Getting back to your main question I would wait for final of Win10 then upgrade your Win8.1
.

Btw have you tried refresh or reset of 8.1 on your PC?

Been running 10 on my main PC for a couple months now. Very solid for me, never looking back. Very impressed actually.

Will there be an option to upgrade from the beta version of Windows 10 to the final version?

Or will you need to do a fresh install?

Microsoft has stated that they intend to make it possible to go from Windows 10 preview to final without reinstallation. No statement on what will definitively be possible at the time of launch.

Just because you *can* doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Beta software is beta software, in the interest of stability I would do a clean install anyway.

Every OS is beta software,always.
That's why you get patches and updates all of the time.
The only difference being that the technical preview is an "unstable version" there is nothing to prevent it to get patched to stable version.

I have the latest build of Win 10 (10074?) instaleed on my second machine which has 16G DDR3, 3770k @4.5Ghz, Sapphire Tri-X OC R9 290. I bought a 240G ssd on sale with a 500G WD Black HDD and did a clean install of the preview. I have my Win 8.1-64 OS on a separate SSD and data on a separate HDD.

I simply disconnect the ssd/hdd combo of 8.1 and hookup the ssd/hdd combo of Win 10.

I did the same thing when Win 8 was in beta.

Win 10 is very solid. Still learning about MS Edge vs Explorer but all in all excited about DX12.

Is Windows 10 Upgrade really worth it? I mean who wants to run an Upgrade version of Windows 10? I think most system builders and gamers would want a clean install which means we are stuck buying a new copy of Windows 10 no matter what.

I have a T410s that I want to use as a mule machine. I have a 64gb SSD. Is that enough space for a test machine for Win 10?

upgrades nowadays aren't the same as upgrades back in the day.

and i'm guessing that, like 'upgrade' versions have always been, you can clean install it if you like.
