Win 10 deletes Win7 icons/start menu?

Is it normal for Windows 10 to delete your Win7 desktop icons and start menu shortcuts when going the upgrade path?

Fine for clean installers, but that's a pretty dumb thing to do to upgraders. Nobody can find their apps.

Luckily I was able to revert back to Win7 easily. Guess I'll wait until I'm ready to go cleanly.

I had a similar issue with 8.1 pro to 10 pro last night when I came up on 10 and everything was gone. In programs and features it still showed everything as being present but the upgrade removed all of them and I couldn't get anything to work. I ended up rolling back to 8.1 to get a usable machine. If I can get some drivers from asus for my xonar d2x I might clean install and try again. Even office 2010 disappeared in my upgraded 10 install so it wouldn't work for me. It did however activate so I should be able to do a clean install with it.

ASUS' cards use the CMedia drivers. Don't wait on ASUS, look up the UNI drivers.

I've looked at the uni drivers and people are complaining about how bad they are.

I'll have to disagree. They briefly did not work for one of the preview builds, but they work fine for me. I'm using the version with the CMedia panel and GX enabled. Only thing that I didn't get to figure out was microphone boost - people in game couldn't hear me very well, I was overly soft.

Else....well, Uni drivers work.

And the unidriver has the same interface as the stock asus driver with graphic equalizer and all? If so and the audio quality is the same as with the asus driver then I will have to try them.

Just restore the shortcuts from your backup image or clone (or copy before starting).

Code:
C:\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

I don't know what people are doing but I did the upgrade 4 times today on various machines including the one in my sig and each and every time it changed nothing. All the shortcuts stayed, preferences remained etc. Everything works

It can have the same interface or the CMedia interface. Both do the same thing. There are also driver versions that reduce overall latency (and to do that, they had to remove things like the Asus panel.)

I refused to touch the ASUS drivers with a 10 foot pool anymore.

Worth noting: I did a reset to get my system from upgrade state to fresh state (because I can) - it came up working just fine with pre-installed drivers that output headphone audio AND spdif. So something is either in the image, or on windows update.
