The level of skill and athleticism this guy had, muchless for a 7-footer, was off the charts, even by today's standards. Far from just a dominant offensive player but also a beast on defense. A must-watch for any true basketball fan.

These are the Final 5 games of Wilt Chamberlain's 1957 Kansas Jayhawk season. Wilt, who won the tournament MVP despite losing in triple over time by 1 point to the North Carolina Tarheals, played spectacular:

0:01 Colorado vs Kansas 3-9-57 (Big-7 Conference Final):
78-63 W
40pts 14reb 12blk 2a 1stl
14-17fg 12-17ft

4:27 Southern Methodist vs Kansas 3-15-57 (Midwest Semi-Finals)
73-65 W
36pts 22reb 5blk 3a 0stl
14-26fg 8-13ft

8:21 Oklahoma City vs Kansas 3-16-57 (Midwest Finals)
81-61 W
30pts 15reb 3blk 0a 0stl
8-17fg 14-22ft

11:13 San Francisco University vs Kansas 3-22-57 (National Semi-Finals)
80-56 W
32pts 11reb 7blk 3a 0stl
12-22fg 8-11ft

15:55 North Carolina vs Kansas 3-23-57 (National Finals)
54-53 L
23pts 14reb 6blk 1a 0stl
6-13fg 11-16ft

Final Conference/Tournament 5-game average:
32.2ppg (.568 fg% .670 ft%) 15.2rpg 6.6bpg 1.8apg 0.2spg

That looked like real sport, unlike nowadays.

Riiiight.

I won't argue that guys like Wilt and Bill Russel were athletes that really haven't been seen since. There have been guys bigger and stronger, but the combination of overall athleticism and height that the two of them had has not been seen in by anybody over 6'8" (Lebron James / Wilkins being the 6'8" examples, otherwise I would be saying probably 6'7" or shorter which is extremely common in the NBA).

That does not mean that current basketball is not a real sport though...

seriously? olajuwon and shaq come to mind as athletically comparable

Not really. Wilt could bench over 500lbs, had a 50" vertical, and was a track star at Kansas competing in the 440, 880, high jump, shot put, etc. He was also Big 7 (now Big 12) champion in some of these events. He is arguably the greatest athlete ever.

Holy crap! I haven't never seen that old of footage of him.
Not only was he enormous, he was fast and could shoot.

Like Jordan in Mutombo's body.

Shaq never had that kind of activity or skills. He was very athletic for his size but he was no Olajuwan. What made him great was his pure power. Seeing Wilt in college for the first time, I can't think of any center in the history of the game I would have taken in the draft ahead of him. (altho many from the 50's and 60's I've never seen this kind of footage of, including russell.)

That footage in general is amazing. They focus on 'fundamentals' and whatnot. How to play good. Not how to look good.

I wonder if old football footage is the same...
