Staring Oscar-nominated Johnny Depp as Mr. Willy Wonka, the film will follow in the footsteps of the original story in which a young boy named Charlie, played in this film by twelve year-old Freddie Highmore, wins a trip to visit the famed chocolate factory that no outsiders have seen for over 15 years. Along with four other children Charlie gets the adventure of a lifetime thanks to finding one of the golden tickets hidden inside Wonka chocolate bars.

Looks like they started filming last week. I think Depp will do a great job, but I'm not so sure about Burton. I like his work, and always have, but there is a good chance he could make this great flick too weird, you know? I mean, its already wacky (in a good way) enough as it is. But I must say, I was surprised how well be did on Big Fish. What an excellent movie! I guess we'll find out.

Also, on a side note...I read a while back that they were considering Mason for the part of Wonka. :p

I really hope so! This does seem to be his kind of movie doesnt it. I just really loved this movie growing up, so I guess I have a little more vested in it. But I guess we always will have the original if they drop the ball :)

I'm really curious as to what the FX will look like. But god, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease no CGI Oompa loompas!

Not really a remake as much as it is a different interpretation of the book...Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory didn't stick to the book as much as it could have...I think this one will be more authentic to the novel...besides, it is called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory afterall...

Burton is certainly the best choice of directors. He's off beat enough, and talented enough to do it right. <--big Tim Burton fan can you tell :p

I was dreading this remake, but now that I know Burton and Depp are behind it I've got some hope.

Yeh, the movie is perfect for him. Depp will do a great job, and hopefully the other actors (whoever they are) will do well.

Concerning the CGI Oompa Loompas - they're sort of in a bind, since the classic painted midgets look will be too "unadvanced" for today's "discerning" audiences, and CGI probably won't be able to get them looking really good. =/

Depp as Willy Wonka clashes a lot with the image of Willy Wonka I got from the first movie. :(

FYI:

The screenwriter who worked on Big Fish will be working on this one. Also, it looks like Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt are going to be the producers. Hrm...some big talent behind this movie.

perhaps with today's CGI we will have a look at LoompaLand, and maybe see an attack by the Vermicious Knid. it would be like Starship Oompa Loompa Troopers.

If they do the Oompa Loompas as well as Gollum then I don't really see a problem. The Loompas will certainly look diffrent than the 70's version. It would be be fun to see behind the scenes clips of little people in green suits.

But they had a pretty big budget for those those movies. I wonder what the budget for this movie is.

Someone call Brad and Jen and have the contact my peeps ASAP! :p

Just from the names I know they've got a big budget. Studio's probably slaivating over product rights. I mean it is Willy Wonka. New candy lines, toys, video games. Also the CG done in Big Fish was pretty good so Burton is probably bringing the same team along.

CGI of people (this includes midgets) is a really tough thing to do. Its one thing to do Bugs, fish, or aliens.....or even gollum. But, when you do people....its gets pretty tricky. This is what I'm afraid of. i say, stick with midgets.

Think it will remain a musical? Think maybe Burton will do it musically like The Nightmare Before Christmas?

yeah but the Loompas don't have to look like midgets in this one. They don't have to look human at all.

Thats true. Did anyone read the book? What were the Oompa Loompas like originally?
