Intel Corp.'s yet-unannounced mainstream Pentium 4 microprocessor is lagging newer versions of
Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s Athlon, according to industry observers, leading the company to breathe new life into its aging Pentium III line.
The new Pentium III speed grade will be among the first to use Intel's new 0.13-micron wafer processing with copper interconnect, sources said. The line will also allow Intel to perfect high-volume production of the new process technology using a mature and proven Pentium III core before transitioning to the next-generation Pentium 4.

Too bad the "paper" 1.13GHz PIII's to be released on the 31st don't get the .13 micron process. If they keep this up, Intel will wipe out our rain forests before we know it 🙁

First Itanium is performing slowly and now big willy is performing slower than the current Pentium III line. Intel is in big trouble now.

And I forgot to mention the Rambus fiasco

It seems as if shortly after the 440BX was made, Intel's competence as a chip company vanished. No NEW design (Cumines are ppros with fast cache, mmx and sse) has been able to match intel's previous accomplishments. The P6 core and the 440BX chipset remain the best designed Intel products. Anybody know about the power issues with new chips?
