Planning on building a cost effective server and was looking at the Zambezi 8 core version since this machine will be running at least 4 virtual machines.

Let me know your thoughts and also recommendations.

I've built several VMWare ESXi servers using AMD 8-core processors. The nature of virtualized servers utilizes the many cores very effectively.

I use supermicro chassis and motherboards with 1 or 2 AMD 8 core processors.

You can also buy AMD servers from Dell and other vendors that are fully assembled. I like supermicro because I can choose all the sub-components myself. I'm very picky about what hard drives, ssd's used. That and Dell charges absolutely retarded amounts for solid state storage.

What kind of servers will you be hosting? What workloads do you expect? Is this for fooling around or is it work related?

If I were to build a new dedicated VM box, an FX-8120 microcenter bundle would be at the top of the list of choices.

I am building it for a friend who plans to host 3 SAP servers for training purposes. I do plan to hit MC once I get the green light from him.
