Support has been confirmed for socket 1150 but will this chipset work too? I'd like to know to help me decide on a 4790k or the next 5770k. I do a lot of single threaded work mixed in with multi-threaded work but with core speed being more important. The 4.4Ghz boost on the 4790k is only 0.1Ghz more than my 4670k but the overclocking potential and HT might be worth it for $100. OTOH I know nothing about the next gen chips and what they are rumored to be.

It depends on your MB. It CAN support it, as long as your MB maker released a BIOS patch for it. Check their CPU compatibility site or the newest BIOS release notes.

I feel like I should've phrased that better. I mean will the z87 support tr 5xxx gen. I forget their code name.
My mobo does support the 4790k.

Depends on the motherboard manufacturer. Most update their BIOS to allow use of updated processors. If you're not comfortable taking a gamble, just pick up a new mobo when Broadwell is released.

For what it is worth, a fair amount of information states Broadwell is only supported By H97/Z97. That's not to say it is impossible that it won't work on a Z87 if a BIOS update can do it. Not to plug a specific company, but usually Asus is about the best with updating BIOS quickly to provide the best support possible for CPUs, that's just my observation. Don't expect a more 'budget' board to have as good of BIOS support down the road. It is a dice-roll at this point IMHO.

My guess is from everything i've read that only the X97 series of boards will support Broadwell.

This is partially why I sprung extra for a Z97 board with my Pentium AE chip. I hope to upgrade sometime next year to Broadwell / Skylake. If you pick a good brand Z87 there's a good chance it'll work with a BIOS update though.
