I have been thinking of my AMD rig and seeing these Intel P4's drop in price. You can get a 1.6A P4 Retail @ Newegg for about 130 shipped. That P4 is easily overclockable to 2.6. Plus, since Athlon XP's and P4's are about the same price, what are you going to get for your next upgrade? I have been loyal to AMD all my life but there may be a change....

Dual AMD XP 1800+'s here, so I'm not going anywhere.

If I was going to go P4 I'd have to go dual Xeons, which would be a little spendier than I can justiry.

Why? I just want to know what's really the difference between the Athlon and the P4, is that 1GHZ gap a really big difference or a bunch of crap?

how's the performance of a overclocked 1.6a/1.8a --> 2.4Ghz+ to the fastest overclocked athlon xp?

id probably get the one with best performance/price ratio.

I think you mean "more instructions per cycle". ;)

I'd get a dual Thoroughbred DP when it comes out.

For a single CPU chip, I want Northwood. Xeon is out of the game for me if I want a new duallie machine.

I bought a Athlon XP 1600+ (OC'ed to 1900+) on Boxing Day. That should hold me over until the Sledgehammer (Opteron, ugh.) comes out. :D

I'd say right now I'm 95% sure I'd stick with the Athlon and 5% sure I'd convert to the P4.

I want to go the AMD route, but I am a wus and I worry about the heat issue. Especially after seeing the articel on tomshardware where the amd cpus burnt to a crisp when the heatsink was removed. The p4 and p3 survived. If it were not for that fact, I would have to smack you if you said you wanted a p4 over the athlon.

I've had a couple of different P4's. And a couple of different Athlons (XPs and T-birds). I like the P4's better. No tweaking for weeks to get the system stable, and they are much cooler hence much quieter.

Even after all those price cuts, P4s would still be well above the AthlonXP. and seeing as how I dont't do anything processor intensive, I'd go for the XP.

AMD is still cheaper though.
here are the prices from my local store:
AMD Athlon XP 2100+ $435.00 (290 US)
Intel Pentium IV 2400 $995.00 (663 US)

i still say screw Intel, there's no way i'll pay double the price for a processor which is a little bit faster. remember that overclocking voids the warranty, screw it up and yer out 1000 bucks which is like a full week of non taxed money, that's like 3 weeks after taxes and basic expenses. screwing up an overclock also destroys the mobo which will set you back another 150.

AMD is still better :)

As for the AMD's running hotter, they will be releasing newer chips using .13micron technology. I wouldn't mind a hammer because I have an OS that supports 64bit chips :p

Same here...I'm not too impressed by either of the current offerings from AMD or Intel...

I'd go for the p4 northwood 1.6a, great price and overclocking king as of right now, get that baby up to 2.4 and more maybe.
