Will xp work on my new PC?

I just ordered the parts for my new computer off of Newegg today, and plan to mainly run linux on it so I ordered it straight up, no questions asked. Problem is, there's a high possibility I'll also want to have windows on there also (partition the HDD)....but I'd rather not pay for another windows license.

I'm writing this right now on my 3-year-old HP Pavillion, running XP home. Yes, the hardware upgrade will be rather extreme. Nonetheless, will I be able to transfer the license to my new computer?

Thanks.

if your talking about a copy that came installed on your hp then NO, that's tied to that one machine

if your talking about owning a actually copy of windows then you should be able to

why is it tied to this machine? oh wait i think i have an idea why...nevermind.

i'll probably just get windows through other ways then, since it's too worthless an OS to actually pay good money for.

Get windows, because it's worthless..? 😕

Its OEM software so its tied to the hardware, a lot of manufactures make the XP OEM specific to the motherboard.

Give it a shot, some Dell XP Pro CDs work on clone machines I have built (for test purposes only ofcourse)

If thats true then you shouldn't even need to use it.

It its worth it to take up hard drive space and use, its worth it to respect the developers license.

HP CDs have a note on the CDs stating that it will work only on a HP PC - this from some older PCs - they may changed. Pull out the restore CDs and see what they say.

All the OEM disks say that (HP/Dell/Compaq/etc.) - it's still the same exact Windows though. Get a copy from any reputable dealer and you'll be ok.

If they are actual Windows XP disks they may work fine - havent really tried it out - but if its a HP restore CD - I tried to repair an OS install on a non HP PC and it did not work.
