will XP auto detect widescreen LCD resolution not currently in setup list?

Hi all,

I am thinking of buying a new lcd monitor, one of the new widescreen types, and it comes at a resolution of 1440x900. In my Windows XP monitor setup panel, there is no such resolution choice in the list right now.

Will the system detect this and offer the choice once the monitor is connected? I don't want to buy it and not have the correct resolution!

Thanks!

Windows might detect your new monitor's resolution capabilities if you use the DVI connection. But one sure way to guarantee it will work; your new monitor should come with a driver disk; use it. :) Either it will come with it or you can DL it from the manuf's site.

the resolutions that you see are only supported through your current monitor. When you upgrade to a LCD your choices will be different

Also, if your video card doesn't support it, then it won't show up. Make sure your VC can support that resolution. I have a 19" widescreen on my work computer, but the onboard video won't display anything other than 4:3 ratios.

I don't think so. When i got my 20in LCD 1680x1050 showed up without any extra work required. FWIW my 15in lcd didn't have options above 1024x768 (the max of the monitor).

when you go into the advanced display settings on the adapter tab there's a button to list all modes - there you should be able to find 1440x900 to confirm your graphics card supports it.

EDIT - I think? Or maybe that's everything the current monitor can do

thanks for the replies --

this particular computer is a cheapo Dell with graphics card: Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family

I notice also that in the display control panel, there is a grayed out optional 2nd monitor, which gives a list of resolutions all the way up to 1920x1200. Maybe this means that it would at least be able to handle the 1440x900 monitor...

thanks!

I think its for what your videocard can do. My monitor is supposed to be 1440x900, but the highest it displays is 1280x1024.
