I am building a media pc and I have a copy of XP pro. Will that cut it or would I be better off using using another operating system? I am open to anything.

Better off with Vista or Win7 for media center or HTPC due to better IHV support for the improved protected pathway features. e.g. Intel's drivers will not use hardware acceleration for decoding of many advanced formats under XP, only Vista/W7.

You can do it, but it won't be as elegant as an OS with Media Center. My HTPC is running XP. It works for what I need it to do, but I basically had to reinvent the wheel to get it to do the things Vista/Win7 do natively. I use GBPVR for DVR.

Depends on what you plan on using for a front end GUI and the specs of your machine. Obviously, you will struggle with a 1GHz processor and built in graphics if you want to do HD.
