My father and I have recently finished our HTPC and are starting to record some of our recordings to DVD.

As said in the Video Forums, my streams were uncompressed. So i downloaded WM Encoder 9 and encoded them in that. Then i took Movie Maker and edited out the commericals. Having done all of this, and before I do any more, when i burn these files (.WMV) with a DVD Burning program will i be able to watch these on a standard Sony DVD Player or PS2 that is hooked up to a TV?

I would like to start this encoding more tonight (AXP isn't too fast ;)).

Nope, I don't know of a DVD player that plays WMV files.

You'll need to convert the WMV files to DVD compliant MPEG2 files. The convert guides over at VideoHelp.com are a great place to start. You might also consider converting to SVCD or VCD, depending on the source files, but there is no guarantee your DVD player can play those (most can).

So i just converted using WM Encoder 9. Now i have to encode back into MPEG. What do i do here? Will the DVD Burning software encode back into MPEG 2 for me?

Maybe, depends on your software. Most require additional software to do MPEG2 encoding since a MPEG2 license is required so it's totally up to the bundle that you got. VideoHelp.com, doom9.net, etc will also have links to other software (like TMPEG) that will do the encoding for you, but almost all are shareware and/or add a watermark on the end result, again because a MPEG2 license isn't free.

I believe I had to use Nero to convert it during the burn process.

No. There are very rare exceptions (so rare, I cannot pull the name out -err wait, one is KISS) to that. If you see a Windows Media tag on the machine, it usually means WMA (audio).

Finally, in that case, will Windows Movie Maker allow me to edit .mpg or MPEG 2 movies. I like its interface as i dont need anything flashy.

AFAIK no, because WMM is free and as I said, a MPEG2 encoder requires a license be purchased.
