Will winning a major sport championship boost the winning team's economy?

Is there a correlation between winning a major sports championship and the economic prosperity of the place?

From my observations of a very small sample (i.e. family and friends), people tend to spend money without regards or they tend to perform certain tasks without any complaints if they are in a happy mood. I suppose, in general, the people's mood plays into the consumer confidence index, so it would make sense to me that a winning city may experience some sort of economic prosperity due to people spending more money or doing more for the same pay. But I have not seen any data that would prove this. This is simply my own hunch.

Advertisments = $
morale of the citizens of particular city = ^
more social projects based around said winning team = FTW!

All I know is that there are going to be a lot of kids somewhere in Africa getting a gift of new shirts and hats that say "New England Patriots, Super Bowl XLII Champs! 19-0"

I was wondering what they do with all of the apparel that they made for the event...I wonder how much they made and where it really goes...

Africa eh?

Swap meets is where I see them. My wardrobe has a few shirts proclaiming the Lakers as Champions in 2004. 😛

Anectodal evidence, proceed with caution.

The Atlanta Braves sucked in the late 80's. You could show up to games 15 minutes before and buy inexpensive, good seats. You could have tailgate parties in the parking lot and still have spaces available. Then they got good. No more of that stuff because the seats almost sold out.

A winning team is a draw for sure and can boast the teams income.

BUT... take the Louisville AAA team. That is a situation where they built the economy around making the ballpark attactive to families. That included clean, non-horsetrough restrooms, picnic areas where folks could bring a lunch, family activities, etc. In the late 80's, Louisville had more game attendees than Atlanta!

Winning is what you make of it. If you jackup prices (like the Falcons did) and do not add extra value, it is a short term gain. If instead, you use it as a tool to bring in and work to keep the new fan base, it is a long term win. So, win a series and look at making improvements like the Louisville Cardinals did and it is a boom that you keep.

it might boost economies in a super-local way... team sells more junk, ticket sales go up, city where team is located gets more in taxes.

though it's kind of a moot point with the giant's moving cities.
