So, I read that MS is officially dropping support for Win98 as of Dec. 15, does that mean that you won't be able to get any updates for it, or just that they'll stop making new ones?

from Here(the small print, footnote #6)

Microsoft will offer paid incident support on Windows 98/98 SE through January 16, 2004. Windows 98/98 SE downloads for existing security issues will continue to be obtainable through normal assisted support channels at no charge during this time. Customers can request Windows 98/98 SE fixes for new security issues and these requests will be reviewed. Fixes for any new security issues can be specifically requested through normal assisted support channels. Web-based self-help support will be available for at least one year after assisted support has concluded. Mainstream support for Windows 98/98 SE ended on June 30, 2002, and no-charge incident support and extended hotfix support ends on June 30, 2003.

From the history of NT Workstation, which had it's support drop at the end of June, I expect that you can download patches untill win98's online stuff gets removed in 2005. Don't know that for a fact, though. You can still download NT workstation's stuff, so I guess that is considured part of the "online self-help".

However definately no new patches or anything (unless something completely horrible happens). Win98 is dead. Anybody using it should move on to bigger and better things.

I would move on to bigger and better things but unfortunately the computer I'm installing it on is incapable of handling 2000 Pro due to some manner of motherboard limitation. (I think because it's an XT mobo, not an AT mobo... or whatever the one is that turns off and on with a hard switch)

EDIT: Oh yeah, since I likely will be installing 98SE on a variety of systems in the coming years, is there any easy way to download all the patches and hotfixes for 98, other than clicking every damn link? I figure it's worth burning a cheap K-Mart bankruptcy clearance CD for.

Yeah I'm wondering the same thing, but for NT4 also!

Well I've started downloading the 98 patches. Maybe I'll get the NT patches as well. I've never used NT much, but I might, who knows. I do have that Win 3.1 system....

yukichigai are you downloading the 98 updates through auto update or did you find direct links to them?

Found direct links. On the microsoft page select "Windows" on the right bar, then go to "Previous Versions", then "Windows 98", then "Downloads". Eventually you get to a section with all the critical updates and recommended updates. A few of the links don't work, but only the ones before about October of '99. 13.4 megs of downloads in all.

They also have links to 95, NT Server, NT Workstation and ME. I'll be downloading all of them starting with 95, going down, finally to ME (bleah), or I'll stop when I exceed the space on a mini-CDR.
