Hello,

I'm about to upgrade my C2D E7200 setup to something new.
Then have some questions that I don't know the answer to, so please help me :)

Will Windows XP install on Skylake platform ?
If not, what about Haswell ?
I would need this to install Windows 8.1 upgrade right after that.

I don't want to buy new graphic card right now, but want to have the setup allowing best gaming experience available with my HD6770. Wouldn't be Skylake i5 6600 to much for that ? Which platform would be "enough" but yet not too old (USB 3.1, m.2, etc. are welcome)? I will use the computer for photo editing (Lightroom), programming, gaming. I would like to have my new setup working for me for next 5-7 years (maybe except the HD6770 that I may want upgrade sooner), as my E7200 did.

Thanks in advance for your help.

This doesn't make sense, I don't think. You want to install XP on new hardware, then you want to install 8.1 immediately after? Why not just install 8.1 directly?

Because I have Windows 8.0 Upgrade bundle, that I can't install on a clean disk. It requires some earlier MS OS to be there already.

prk, are you not given the ability to goto windows 10 in windows 8? I would take that and then do a vanilla install to 10.

Thanks for the hint JeffMD. I upgraded to W10 on my old setup today and made clean install DVD. Will use it as last resort, since I would rather stay with W8.1

Your call of course, but on a desktop, I cant imagine preferring Win 8.1 to Win 10. Seven maybe but not 8.1.

As to your original question, pretty much any modern cpu will overpower a HD6770. Matter of fact, I would not even bother upgrading the cpu unless you do a gpu upgrade or plan to in the near future. 6770 is quite old now, and was a low end card even when new.

Yep I love 10, have it on all my house systems except my ultrabook. On it, I had to go back to 8.1 The drivers never worked right, any video that wasn't HTML5 (like flash) would glitch half the screen. Temps constantly ran hot and battery was almost halved. It also wouldn't stay asleep more than 30 minutes. 8.1 is what it came with and that's what's stable. Sony is working on 10 drivers for it,, but until there's an official release (and that is if they stay on course to do so) I'll still with the pleasureful 8.1 experience on it vs the upgrades of 10 with the constant struggles with everything else.
