Will Windows Update still function after April 8?

I understand that Microsoft will stop providing new updates for Windows XP after April 8, but I'm wondering if Windows Update will still provide the previous updates. IOW, if I do a clean install of Windows XP from the installation disk, can I install updates, service packs, etc. that now exist? 😕

that will not be so bad as long as people have a very good av and don't use anything with microsoft in the name. most of the security patchs are to fix internet explorer and even with windows 7 there are still holes in security for internet explorer.

Until the exploit that someone was holding to for release on April 9th rolls out. Next couple of months might be interesting.

Various AV and security softwares have in general declared support for XP beyond Microsoft's, some specifying, some not specifying when they will/may cut off support. That includes Mozilla (Firefox).

XP is still a poor risk especially after that date with no support ,you are far better of moving to Win7/8 or good old Linux(like you have done).

I still have 3 different computers which use windows xp, 1 which has windows 7 and 1 which has ubuntu 12.04

If I were a virus and trojan author I wouldn't waste my time and write them for an old operating system that MS has ended life suport for, I would write them for the newest OS on the market, like W7 and above knowing that the data I now want is on those systems with the newer operating systems. But that's just me.

Depends how you look at it,XP still has a very large user data base(not surprsing since it has been out since 2001) world wide,also its weaker on security then Win7/8 so for hackers still a very tempting target,even more so when Microsoft stops security support next month for it.

I know if I was a hacker I would go for a popular weaker OS,why go for a harder target when there are weaker ones around?

I supose you are correct, but if I want your credit card number, I doubt I would find it on an XP system now.

I am bit safer now because i don't have a credit card after my bank was already hacked and all of their credit card accounts got leaked to hackers.

I'd say you can find tons of credit card numbers on XP systems. For example, if you've ever used a Redbox kiosk, your CC number is there. One of the Redbox kiosks near me crashes pretty regularly with the BSOD. In the text on the screen, you can see that it's running XP.
