Im askin for a friend, will it support a 64 bit athlon and nforce3 mobo? Or will i have to send him a copy of win2000pro or winxppro...

It should work, but I would hold off until I could afford a copy of Windows 2000 or XP. Installing nForce2 drivers on Windows 98 was a royal PITA (had to manually install each device one by one, rebooting after each). I wouldn't think that nForce3 would be much different.

It all depends on the driver support from the mobo maker. He will not be able to make use of the 64 bit functions however.

Don't wish to add to your problems, but If he buys new software, make sure it runs on Win98SE.
I have come across a few "updated" programs that no longer run on 98

Find out which mobo and go over to their driver d/l page. You'll see if they offer 98se drivers. May just offer win ME drivers, but they should work for 98se.

He wants to run a 16/32 bit OS on a 64 bit capable CPU? Why on earth would he want to do that?

It will work as long as there are drivers for it, but of course it will be less than optimal, some newer software requires special treatment to even install (Doom3 for example).
