Will Win2K run faster on my laptop than WinXP?

Here are my laptop specs:

PIII 600MHz
128MB RAM (PC100 i think)
20GB HD (probably 4200rpm)

I've got WinXP on it right now, with all the visual enhancements turned off. all i really do on the laptop is surf the web and basic computing stuff. it runs ok now, but i'm wondering if Win2K will run faster on it. sometimes if i have a few browsers open, it starts to lag. nothing unbearable, but just wondering if it would run smoother w/ Win2K.

is it worth the reinstall?

have you also tried turning off some of the services that XP has on? Some of those services will also be present in Win2k, and they could bog down the system. Try to turn off some more pointless stuff before a reformat and reinstall. Less hassle.

try this out for info on the services and which ones are safe to turn off.

Not really if all the eye-candy is uninstalled and as FH said the number of services are brought down to a basic minimum. XP loads faster than 2k when both are configured similarly.

thanks for the replies, guys. i really don't feel like reinstalling the OS, so i'll look into diabling the services that i don't need.

If you can get another stick of RAM into your laptop, it'll really help with performance. 256 will make WinXP much happier.

Likewise for 2000, 128MB of RAM really is the "bare minimum" for either OS nowadays (even Microsoft updated their 2K Pro system requirements to reflect this).

If you want to get RAM for your system Crucial usually has good prices (and free shipping) and their website will help you figure out specifically what type of RAM your system needs:

I've had 2000 running on my P2 laptop with 0 problems and probably won't make the upgrade unless it becomes pertinent that I need to.

doh, my bad I was looking at the Windows 2000 Server System Requirements. For Windows 2000 Professional they publish the minimum as 64MB.

I would still recomend 256+ for either of them.
