It seems to me that Whistler Personal will be a HUGE upgrade from the Win9x line, but will Whistler Personal/Pro really be much of an upgrade from Win2000 Pro? Or will it be mostly cosmetic make overs?

I'm trying to decide if I should get Win2000Pro now, or wait for whistler. I will probably get Whistler Pro over personal, becuase at some point I intend to run Dual Durons on AMD760MP :) and I heard personal has no SMP support.

Any advice? I'm really sick of Win98SE...but if you guys think Whistler will be a big upgrade over 2000pro I'll try and hold out...I don't really want to buy both.

Edit: that would be AMD760MP not 760 ;)

It won't be a huge leap. IMHO, going from win2k to Whistler will be similar to going from Win98 to WinME. All the gains you will get from whistler will be available as a free download from Microsoft to add to Win2k.

Heh, I am beta testing Whistler right now for Microsoft, and yes that is very incorrect saying that you will be able to download additions to Windows 2000 Pro/Server/or Advanced Server to make it be Windows Whistler. Microsoft has no plans to do this. BTW: the OS at beta 1 is suprizingly stable, there are some things I don't like about the OS, but I am sure MS will make the OS usable to most of the public anyways.

Would you recommend waiting for Whistler Pro over Win2000 Pro?

Also do you know when the release date is?

The FAQ Need4Speed linked to Said something about April 2001...is that true? I've heard more like Q4/2001 most of the time I ask.

They say April 2001.... but with Microsoft nothing is ever set in stone. As far as waiting.... well if you have the $ get 2000 Professional now.... it is stable and runs 98% of the games out there with the proper patches applied. Take care.
