Will we ever see support for HTML5 video?

I recently noticed that lot of Youtube videos don't work on Linux, I did further reading and it looks like HTML5 uses some technology that's patented, thus not allowed to be distributed with Linux. This really sucks, I thought html5 was all about something open and universal.

Is there ever going to be a way to view such videos, or is it kind of hopeless, just like Netflix is because of DRM?

Just booted Linux Mint 13, went to youtube, joined the HTML5 trial and got this:

Digging deeper, it's using the vp8.0 and vorbis codecs:

The problem isn't HTML5, it's the codec/plugin. You either don't have the codec/plugin installed, or your codec/plugin is broken.

Try this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tYrd4tPVXs&webm=1

If that doesn't work, go here and join the trial, then try the video again.

Almost all browsers have support for HTML5. The problem is youtube itself. If the video is in a playlist the video would not play with the html5 player.

Hmm so it's just my install that's borked then? Not really surprised given it's been nothing but trouble since day 1. What would I have to do to fix it? Anything I need to install?

No your install is not borked in this regard. It's youtube and their stupidity.

If you want to test, use vimeo and their HTML5 player. It will work with every video on their site.

I just tested this, and it first played with Flash, but I disabled the Flash plugin and HTML5 worked fine:

Go on totalhalibut's youtube page and play any video there and see if HTML5 video works.

They aren't working, but the problem is that those videos simply don't work with HTML5.

Our support for HTML5 is an early experiment, and there are some limitations. HTML5 on YouTube doesn't support videos with ads, captions, or annotations and it requires a browser that supports both the video tag and h.264 encoded video (currently that means Chrome, Safari, and ChromeFrame on Internet Explorer). We will be expanding the capabilities of the player in the future, so get ready for new and improved versions in the months to come.
