Will Vista SP1 install via Windows Update?

You need to install some prereqs. Install everything and reboot a few times and it should show up.

It WILL download via Windows Update. BUT, it may require certain prerequisites to be installed first. A common one is an update to a network card. I suggest surveying the "Optional" hardware driver updates and installing them and then trying Windows Update again.

I downloaded everything besides the language packs and Texas Hold'em

Restart, insure any final updates are there. It will show up, it does take a little bit.

I restarted and went to system and it still just says Vista Ultimate. These are the two updates that will not install for whatever reason
ATI driver update for X300/X550
Nvidia driver update for Nvidia MCP61 serial ata controller

Does it matter if you do a clean install of Vista , then install the SP1 files right away without meeting the "pre-requisites'?

I usually wait until i have enough updates done for it to show up in the update menu, then i install the downloadable sp1 i have saved.

But if i dont have to do all those other updates first, then i wont bother on my next install.

Have you considered slipstreaming SP1 into your Vista disk? Saves time next install.
Yes, actually i did and have for awhile since the Guide in Maximum Pc a few months back.

But wouldnt that still be just like installing SP1 after a fresh install before those "pre-requisite" updates?
And on my pc, there are quite a few updates needed to be installed before SP1 shows up on my update screen.

In other words, why are they "pre-requisite" and required before sp1 will show up on the update screen in the first place?
And what is different if you dont install those "pre-requisite" updates first?

My install has run flawlessly since Day 1 even b4 SP1 and even better after SP1.

And i dont wanna screw that up by not having certain needed updates on my next clean install.

The pre-reqs are things to help ensure a Windows Update install of SP1 will work properly. If you have the full installer (as you did) and install it, you'll wind up with the same or even newer versions of the code in question. Think of the pre-reqs as a springboard to fix install issues some users would have that if they had SP1 they wouldn't have (chick-egg problem...)

Vista can take quite some time before SP1 appears. Generally, if you just ignore it and go on with your business it will eventually pop up.

Now that makes sense.
