will value 3200 ram be okay for OC if a divider is used?

Alright, so im going to try my hand at OCing and I just need a few things clarified. Ive already did a bunch of searches but i just want somthing conclusive

I want to OC a Paris Core Sempron 3100. Contemplating between a Epox 8kda3j and a DFI to do the job. want to buy the epox but the dfi is very appealing.

I saw the killer OC they had on xbitlabs with their semp running at over 2.5ghz and Id like to do the same. Thing is, they had DDR500 mem. But then they were still using dividers to get that high... with slower ram like DDR400, the only diff is that I would be using a bigger divider right?

I think I get the general idea of memory dividers... you run the mem asynch with the mem at lower speeds and crank up the FSB, but in doing so that overclocks the mem back up to the original rated speed with a far higher FSB..... right?

If so, then if im going to be running a divider, is there any point in getting ram that is over DDR400?

If i run my DDR400 ram with the 166 divider, then i can reach DDR400 mem with a 250 FSB clock. But im guessing the bigger the divider, the more of a hit i will see in performance right?

But assuming that im not going to try to run 1:1 plain jane DDR400 would be fine no? My clock should only be limited by the FSB max my mobo is capable of (or rather HTT)

The a64s are not bandwidth starved at all in general, so Value ram should be fine, I think there was a post earlier displaying the differences in performance using different ram frequencies, and it was pretty minimal. The sempron is generally based on the same core as the a64's so you should be in good shape with value ram.

And you are right on the money with the motherboard limit. You will either hit the limit of your chipset fsb, or your cpu limit, and it will probably be the latter, although I dont know that much about the epox.

Good luck, and that sempron is probably the best bang for buck you can get right now, good job doing homework.

thanks for the fast reply!

haha you wouldnt believe how much reading ive been doing over the past few days. ever since i bought a 6600GT ive been determined to squeeze every last frame out of it.

AA and AF are just too purty =)

haha now the question is.... value right? how value... the DFI gives a buttload of divider settings and i guess having some DDR400 that can do 210 or higher wouldnt be bad provided a little more juice.

What about some truly cheap ram like Wintec or Kingmax. 35 bucks for 512... sweet :)

When most people say value, I think they mean corsair, crucial or kingston value.... with these they are cheap but also run cl2.5 timings at 1T which may not be possible on generic value ram..... stability comes into issues here and when you're talking this cheap already isnt $10 worth the added stability?

some value ram overclocks pretty well too.... eg. 250mhz isnt out of the question.... depends on what you can find (I have hynix d43's that run 250-260)

id like to run 1T but i was under the impression that unless i get myself some single sided ram, i would be forced into 2T when using two 512 sticks.

yeah, i know most people mean those brands, just wondering if the others would be okay =) and as for OC, seems like the luck of the draw... but who knows, maybe some Corsair Value select will do at least 220 for me
