Will Using A Mobile Phone For MP3 Duty Be Common Soon?

well, samsung did that a while ago and that didn't fare too well, but i guess it didn't have a BT headset

I personally don't like the idea of combining the cell phone with MP3 player... if I drain the battery on my ipod, I don't care... if I drain the battery on my cell phone, that's a major problem....

Need to improve battery technology and nonvolatile memory prices.

Ideally, I'd like a unit I can stow in my bag or pocket that is a small, touchscreen device with BT, WiFi, 2.5 or 3G data service, nice screen, 10-20GB of nonvolatile memory, good battery life, QWERTY keyboard, reasonable processor, and the current feature set of WM5. It would have a small wireless (BT?) remote with a 1 or 2 line LCD for mp3 track info/caller ID and stereo BT headphones with mike. I'd happily pay $1k right now for such a device if the battery lasted 10-12 hours of continuous mp3/video/phone use.

I think it's inevitable that mp3s and phones will converge. I won't pick one up this generation, storage and battery life just isn't what i would like it to be... and besides, my V600 and mini-ipod are suiting me just fine atm... but more than likely i'll pick up one next generation.

As for using the BT headsets... probably not. The BT headsets are meant for phone conversations, it just doesn't have the quality and would be too cumbersome. I don't mind carrying earbuds around.

It's just a matter of time.
They're getting close already, but I think a device like I described is optimal.

No way on the camera. I've already seen the horrible limitations placed on tiny cameras, by their tiny lenses. All the wonderous electronics in the world can't replace a decent sized lens. It's not bad they can throw that feature in there for emergency use, but they won't replace a good camera.

Phones CAN replace MP3 players though. Sound quality can be identical. Throw bluetooth in there, and phones actually one up the MP3 players.

It is just a matter of time. A cell phone just needs more memory and some very minor changes to be a decent mp3 player. Bluetooth headphones would be nice too but are not strictly necessary.

So, what's the answer? Why is this not more prevalent? Who's got the bluetooth stereo headphones I can try locally? I'm near Circuit City, Best Buy, MicroCenter, Sears, Target, Staples... 😕

people with smartphones have been listening to mp3 and watching video on their phone for a while now.

smt5600 is a great example.
