even todays strongest comps cant play quake3. So how do you think they will stand against HL2? Because I normally upgrade my cpu/mobo every 1.5-2 years and normally during that time I'm one one game engine so I don't have the need to upgrade. It would really suck to upgrade my 1.2ghz tbird with 512mb sdram to a 1700+ or 2500+ barton and to have it blow in HL2/Tribes3 and all the other games coming out within the next year or so.

so to round it up... will todays budget hardware (1700+/2500+ barton) be able to play tomorrows games okay without setting everything to the low settings?

imo, the 2500+ should be able to play HL2 well, provided your video card is also a good one(i don't mean Radeon 9700, more like a Radeon 9500 Pro)

There must be something wrong with your PC.

My second computer can do 120 - 140fps using PIII 600Mhz, CL GeForce2 GTS 32MB and 256MB.

I think 1 - 1.5Ghz with 512MB and a good video card will do just fine.

Although I think today's comps will be able to play it fine, otherwise noone will buy the game, I think this guy meant doom3.

nearly every comp with a GF3+ can play the alpha leak fairly well. the final version will be a lot more optimised...

Also, HL2 is said to have low minimum reqs, although if you do want all the eye candy you need a decent comp.

Yeah, my eyes bugged out after reading that but I think he meant Doom3 :)

Even if it is Doom3, JC says he is aiming for playable framerates on a 1.5GHz CPU (that's real GHz, not a P4 :D) and GF3/Radeon 8500. It depends on what details you want to see at what framerate that makes playing Doom3 "impossible to play" or not. id's games are notorious for forcing many'a gamers to upgrade though for a better gaming experience :D

Also remember that 30-50fps should be considered normal for D3 since it is purely single-player...so they went with higher detail.

I wonder how many people would report "WTH I'M GETTING ONLY 70FPS WITH MY RAD9700!!!" once it is out.

I know you meant Doom3, but even Quake3 plays way different from 200fps to 300fps.
