Will Today's DVD Players be Obselete Next Year?

You know it's not gonna happen in a landslide, right? It's going to take time for people to be convinced enough that buying another player for negligible gain is worth it, and that they want to plop down the money for a new format. The discs will be more expensive at first, most likely, which will also be a deterrent. It'll be a few years.

the fact is people won't have a choice. the companies will stop making dvd only players, and ALL new players will be either hddvd or blue disk compatible. in 2yrs it will be done.

Not true. They're still making VCRs, though it's an obsolete medium. If people aren't willing to buy them, there won't be a demand for them. Especially since most people who want a DVD player will already have them, and if their ONLY choice is to buy another, more expensive one, they just won't buy a new one. I

Agreed, we've had VHS for more than 20 years. DVDs may not see a similar life but we're not going to see them disappear overnight. NOTHING happens that fast, too many factors. Like my wallet for one 🙂

Additionally: TVs. There's new tech that's being pushed really hard, but you can still get an ordinary, same as 15 years ago TV if you so choose. Much as companies would love to stop making this so they could get people to pay more money, it's not a feasible thing to do.

you numbnuts, these players will be dvd capable as well.

vcrs are cassets, dvds and hddvds will play ON THE SAME PLAYER. there will be NO need for the companies to make non hddvd sets. dvds will still be around but NO PLAYER will be without hddvd capability. causeing the inevitable end to regular dvds in 2-3 years. these will be dvds, just with more capacity

Ummm... case in point, CD-ROM drives are still being manufactured and used despite the existence of DVD-ROMs... they're both discs and DVD-ROMs are backward compatible. It's a question of economics, not of technology.

DVD players will still be around in two years, trust me.

Down the road there will be replacements but I don't see standard DVDs and DVD players leaving anytime soon.

DVD is way, way too young for the general public to switch. Part of the reason LaserDisks failed.

they have to realize that the DVD market != to the computer market.

People will go 'wtf, I just bought a DVD player, no way am I buying another machine"

People were ready for a new format, that is why they switched.
