Trying to figure out how my house networking works

If I run a Ethernet cable from my modem into the rj45 plug in my wall of my house.. In theory should it send the signal to the rest of the jacks in my house I have four of them through out my house.

In the garage they never used a switch the individual strands are just spliced together.

Should this work or am I missing something.

Thanks for the advice

You are missing something.

In order for this to work you need a full 8 strand connection from the modem to a switch and then from the switch to each location.

As Larry said, telephone doesnt need this but a network does for sure.

In addition, if your Modem is Nor a Modem Router you need a Router too.

Plugging multiple computer to a regular Modem does Not work unless you pay for multiple External IPs.

Ok this is making more sense than... It is a modem router sorry forgot to mention that

Well I can't really figure out the purpose of the networking they installed in my house.

I would have to cut all the spliced cat5e in the box in my garage wire them to a switch and then plug my modem into that I guess.

They have basically just run cat5e to the various rooms in my house and then just tied them all together although there is a fifth cat5 tied into them that I'm not sure where that one goes
