place a converter at both ends of a sata cable and plug it in to the drive and the board will this work?
it would be nice to be able to use skinny sata cables with my ide drives
 
No it will not work, at least with such a simple scheme...

What may work (I think some motherboard manifacturers already provide it) is a SATA to PATA converter, so that you can plug your IDE drive in a SATA controller.
