Will this work, without speed compromise ?

I have a spare HDD that will not work as a primary slave, no matter what jumper settings, etc. It will work on the secondary IDE. But I have a CD & a CD/R/RW drives that normally occupy the secondary side of the IDE. If I put the CD (infra 52x creative) as the primary slave will it have any effect on the operation of the HDD (40gig samsung 7200rpm) under normal use or just if both units are reading/writing at the same time ?

There probably will be some slow down if you are reading files off the CD-ROM.

But both drives will operate at their full ATA specs, older boards used to limit both devices to run at the same speed (Pre 440LX days) and some people still think this is so....but it ain't.

Optimally, every bit of hardware should be on it's own channel but this is not always possible, having a CD and a HDD is not the best idea but the slow down won't be as big as you think, only when CD is in intensive use will you notice (I believe!)....

ribbony et al.,

Remember, a few brands/models of drives (WD in particular) have different jumper settings for Master (stand-alone) and Master (with Slave present). If your Primary Master drive is one of these , just properly setting the jumpers will fix you up. If you have an 80-wire cable on the primary adapter (which should all be manufactured as CS cables by IEEE spec.), you could also try Cable Select. Set your drives to Cable Select and connect the Master on the end connector and the Slave in the middle. Hope this helps...
