Was going to buy another set of NiMH AA's for my new Canon A80 today, and I was wondering - I have a Rayovac NiMH / NiCad / Renewal charger that's a couple of years old, model # is PS-3. would I be able to charge the newer, higher-capacity batteries in it? I would guess so, but I'd rather be safe than sorry :)

Your batteries are only as good as their charger.

Invest in a high quality charger like the Maha C-401FS

You can thank me later. :)

If you consider sparks, exploding batteries and a burning house "working" then yes, it will work :p

Just buy a new charger...you know you really want a new faster charger, thats why you posted here, so that you could justify buying it to yourself. :)

Thanks for the advice, but that wasn't what I asked :)

This is a little closer - I figured that newer chargers would work with low-capacity batts, but not the other way around.

Oh, I really have no idea. I would just buy a new charger that charged them faster.

I'm impatient with money to burn :p

and I'm not :) I usually just charge the batteries overnight. That said, I wouldn't mind having a faster charger that I could use in my car.

It'll charge your batteries fine. However, it pays to have a smart charger. They will cut off rather than putting an endless charge on your batteries, thus decreasing their life. The only diff between your batteries now and old ones is the core materials and their output capacities. NiCD and NiMH charge the same way with roughly the same voltages prime.

True. Oh, and I am using NiMH batteries, not NiCads. They're just older, lower capacity ones than what is availabe now. Bought them the same time that I bought the Rayovac charger.

NiMH charges fine on slow charge NiCd charger, but why do you want to anyways?

It will probably take over 24 hrs given how much higher the capacity on NiMH's are compared to NiCd's it was designed for.

You can build your own charger, just be mindful of the supplied current and be sure to unplug it at precisely full charge time (don't have to be that precise). The fancy high dollars chargers just added digital trickle charging for longer battery life. A little research into NiMH charger on your friendly google search engine will get you up and running in no time. I built my own, I was into R/C racing, and accessories were getting a little bit out of hands, so I decided to build most of the shiets that I can build myself. They worked fine, and are still working.
