The original issue is posted here. I'm posting this here to get a few quick responses. If you have a chance, check out and see what you think.
I just bought an eVGA 680i SLI motherboard. I haven't really had a chance to check it out yet, because I keep crashing and getting BSODs. It's annoying, to say the least.
Here's a quick summary of what I've found, and what I've tried:
1 - The system crashes usually after an hour or two IF it has been sitting off for a while. It crashes sooner if I manage to power it on after a recent crash. After crashing, the system WILL NOT power back on for at least ten minutes (probably just enough time to let it cool down). The motherboard still lights up when the PSU is turned on, but if I turn the system on (by the case, or motherboard power switchs), it turns itself right back off.
2 - The BSOD I receive say something to the fact of "shutting down to protect system components." The hex code: ***STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x892CD748, 0x892CD8BC, 0x805D1140)
3 - While running memtest86 or sitting in BIOS, the system didn't crash. I might not have given it enough time, though.
4 - After the latest crash, I physically felt the usual components. Most were warm, but the heatpipe between the MCP and SPP, and the MCP itself were very hot.
5 - The fan IS installed on the SPP heatsink. My case has plenty of fans running. However, I have an 8800GTX that towers over the MCP, obviously not helping the temps.
6 - Memtest86 and Orthos were at least somewhat stable (2x full pass and 5x test 5 pass in memtest, 10 minutes stable in Orthos)
My questions are:
1 - Can I remove the heatsinks and heatpipe on the SPP and MCP, remove the thermal paste, and reapply them with AS5 without voiding my warranty? I want to be able to RMA this board if nothing else works.
2 - Can I move the graphics card to the PCI-E x16 #2 or #3 slots without having the system scream at me? I know they suggest using the #1 slot when you have only one card.
I'm going to bed for now, defeated for the day.
Thank you for the help. Sorry for the double posts, but I'm basically looking for a quick answer without making someone read through the entire body of my other post.
