Will this system handle DVD playback?

Here are the partial specs for the system...
AMD Duron 800 on a FIC AZ11EA motherboard
256MB RAM
Aopen 12x DVD Drive
Maxtor 20GB Hard Drive
eVGA nVIDIA GeForce2 mx200 32MB

Would I be better off to use an ATI card? What software DVD decoder to use? Or should I get a hardware DVD decoder?

Thanks!
Hawk

Uhmmm....wow you must think alot of DVDs eh? 😉

Recommended spec for pure software playback mode is P2/400. A duron 800 can play DVDs quite fine.

Go to the FAQ linked to in my Sig and to the general hardware section, there are some FAQs about Software DVD players, and Software vs Hardware.

You do not *need* hardware but you may want it.

it depends, that system should handle dvd decoding fine

but if you want to dedicate your cpu cycles to something else while watching dvds, then a hardware decoder would be beneficial

the ati cards have built in decoders or you can get an sigma hollywood+ card

as for software, i use powerdvd and it works great for me

I am running a cel. 550/850 playing dvd's and had little problems after i put another 128 megs sdr in to give a total of 256 megs so i would bet that you'll be fine !

I was playing DVDs fine with a TNT1 and Cel 450. Your system is more than enough. DVD playback is not that demanding nowadays.
