will this setup work for a WinXP fileserver?

mobo is some i810 asus matx thing

then 2x128mb PC100 (or more on second dimm)

HDD will be a WD 1000JBSE pull from my current machine



Think this will run WinXP fine? There won't be many programs, just the basics + software av, firewall, and a couple antispyware progs.

The CPU is fine but 256 megs is low for WinXP. 512 is much better. even if you can only get 384 it will run better.

I think 256 will be fine for a file server, just make sure you don't have unneccesary processes running.

It will run fine but a bit slow, I would recomend 384mb-512mb of ram, as XP uses almost 256mb just to run itself.

I'm more worried about the CPU speed/fsb than the ram. I can probably score another 256mb PC100 DIMM, bringing the total up to 384mb.

a PII running at 400MHz with 128MB mem is fine for a boring file server.

If this thing is only serving files then it will be fine. A fast CPU is not needed for a file server and 256MB is more than enough to run WinXP and use it as just a file server, especially if you are the only one pulling files from it.

Our old file server was a Dual PPro 200Mhz with 512MB running NT Server and it served files to over 250+ users without a hiccup. A Celeron 766 with 256MB is MORE then enough power for a file server.

1. Pentium MMX 266 MHz + Compatible Motherboard + 512 MB If It Detects
2. Dual Pentium Pro 150/166 + Compatible Motherboard + 512 MB <-- Recommended Solution
3. Pentium II 450 MHz + Compatible Motherboard on i440BX + 512 MB
4. Pentium III 500, 550, 600 MHz + Compatible Motherboard on i440BX + 512 MB

For a file server...ram, FSB and harddrive speed are the only real concerns. Pretty much any processor made in the last 6-8 years can get the job done.
