I've got an am3 board/cpu and I need to confirm if it's just some marketing crap or if it's actually designed for and only works with intel boards

Your mobo will not do triple channel, so you should be looking at a kit with 2 or 4 sticks of RAM.

It will default to duel channel, but will still work.

thanks for the help so far! I understand it will work as dual channel instead of triple, which isn't bad because I'd be using dual channel anyway.

But I'm concerned about is the whole "made for i7" "xmp" stuff. I don't know if it's compatible with amd systems because of the "specific" marketing.

Don't worry about marketing hype like "Gaming Memory", etc...
Go for DDR3 that's rated for operation at 1.5v or lower.
