A Fry's Electronics luckily just opened up near me, and they had these huge grand opening sales. I found a "Just MFG' 425W PSU for $28 on sale and free after rebate. I was wondering if that could run a system with this hardware:

Will the crappy brand name affect performance that much? I plan on doing a bit of overclocking, maybe 200Mhz on the CPU. I dont realy know that much about OC'ing, so will I be able to work with this PSU? Thanks in advance!
 
no, even if you dont want to overclock. definately not. the psu is the most important part of your computer. go on the internet and get a good one. you wnat to have a lot of amps on each rail. even if you get a no name 1000 watt psu, it still wont be as good as a high quality 400w.
 
DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT!

getting a no name crappy PSU is one of the worst things you can do when building a computer. I reccomend an OCZ Mod Stream that you can get for about 60$ if you wait for a sale. The PSU is one of the most important parts of a computer, and with a new venice that you want to OC, i would not go cheap at all.
 
I agree with everyone.

Please do yourself a favor and don't go with anything less than something like this Fortron Source AX-500A for $69 delivered from actbuy.com ( a newer vendor but one with excellent ratings at resellerratings.com over here. You can read up on the powersupply over here at Tom's Hardware or over here at SilentPcReview.com in which they state that "...the Blue Storm has an extremely flat efficiency curve, and its peak efficiency is between 150W and 250W: right in the typical power range. There are other power supplies that have a higher peak efficiency, but these units typically reach this peak at wattages that are beyond what most systems draw. Furthermore, the difference between the highest and the lowest measured efficiency for the whole 460W range was just 3%. Our measurements place the Blue Storm well above its rated efficiency of >70%...".

Another nice candidate would be the OCZ Modstream OCZ 450 which can be had for $79 delivered over here at Monarch Computer Systems.

Also, another EXCELLENT choice may be this Seasonic S12-430 over here at PCAlchemy.

The Fortron Source model mentioned provides sufficiently efficient power over a wide range of loads but can be a little noisy.

The OCZ provides excellent power characteristics as well as fancy rounded connectors that some people complain (although they make for "neat" pc inards) are stiff and hard to deal with.

The Seasonic is both an excellent P/S that can deliver up to 80% efficiency across a wide range of loads and is a VERY QUIET power supply.

Please don't skimp on the most important "organ" of your PC, it's HEART that pumps the blood.
 
Anything I can get for under $50? -_-; I kinda have a $1k budget and unless the parts of my comp go down in price that much, I'll have to skimp on some stuff...
 
Depending on the cost of the X700 Pro you might be able to save money and get more performance with a 6600GT also the Newegg has a nice cheap but solid PSU Xclio I believe it is.
 
just grab a sparkle or forton or something. or just grab an antec case such as the sonata or something that comes with a PSU. $90 for the sonata is a steal.

Yes FieryDemise, the P/S to which you are referring, which was being endorsed earlier today by the HIGHLY respected RIBBON13, who is a member ot the Anandtech "Off Topic" forum "Night Shift Crew" and who is already a "diamond member" and has been posting here only since February 1 of this year, is this XClio P/S over here at NewEgg which can be had for $57.49 delivered.

I discovered, with the help of RIBBON13, that it is a Channel Well product; a company that provides some power supplies to names like Zalman, Sparkle, Fortron, and apparently even some PC Power & Cooling power supplys.

Thanks for making this topic...If I didn't know that a bad PSU would ruin my computer I would have gotten one that might have costs $17.99!
