The PCI Express Video Connector connects to a video card that requires one. The psu is a very good one. How did it not meet the needs of your friend?

Well he's a dumb ass (I mean that in a good way :)), his motherboard is AGP and will not work with this PSU.

So he told me I could have it because he knows im upgrading.

I just wanted to make sure it will work ok with that motherboard.

The PSU will be fine but I would not recommend that motherboard, or any other that uses active cooling on the northbridge. The fans are loud and tend to fail far sooner then they should, sometimes in a matter of only a few months.

Take a look at the Asus A8N-Premium instead.

Could you recommend a motherboard that is not SLI, its not needed and I will never use SLI, only single card for video.

Anything besides the MSI?

Thanks

I know what you mean but sadly but there no passive non-SLI nForce boards that I can recommend. Gigabyte dose have few models with a passive heatsink but it's far too small.

I have modified this AOpen board to passive cooling several times with success so that may be an option for you (even though Aopen tends to use above average fans on the chipset). Notice how the Northbridge is above the PCI-E slot as to not block long graphics cards, this separates the Aopen from most other nForce4 boards.

lol you really don't like those fans on the NB huh :)

Seems like they all have them unless you go SLI, which to me would be a waste.
I don't think I have much choice here.

Well having to completely rip apart a system just to replace a dead NB fan will do that. ;)

But seriously they are a bad idea. Just do some searching, there are probably dozens of threads involving dead nForce4 NB fans on these forums, and these are practically new boards. Also if you take a look at the new nForce5 boards almost all of them are passive, care to guess as to why?

I would say bit the bullet and go with A8N-Premium; PCI-E 16x slots are not necessarily restricted to just video cards, they could have future uses. Or go with the Aopen I linked above and replace the fan with a passive Zalman.

yes:thumbsup: they have some cheap solutions for the northbridge that are supereffective. Check out this one at clubit.com. Only $7 shipped. I would second the asus a8n-e and replace the nb fan with the zalman i linked.
OP you are so lucky.

Because they are wicked cool looking that?s why!!

m21s, the NB fan is not really worth worrying over in most people?s opinions. As long as you don't get a cheap motherboard (ECS or the like) you should be fine.

Probably 90% of NF4 motherboards have NB fans, and even 200 defective fans amount to about .1% of the total motherboards sold with NB fans. Don't let one sour apple ruin them all ;)

That said, the Asus fan less motherboard are very nice if you can afford them.

Do that and you block the 16x PCI-E slot, rendering it useless for higher-end cards. The Aopen has the nForce4 chipset above the 16x slot, a much better location.

really... do all the asus' have the same problem? But how is that possible, is the passive cooler that much bigger than the fan?

power hungry agp cards i've bought come with molex standard?
unless they are openbox newegg?
