I'm putting together a new system and was wondering if the PSU in my current system will work in the new build. It's an Antec BU-500P and the specs for the new system are:

E8400
Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3L
Gigabyte 8800GT
2GB Crucial DDR2
WD 640GB SATA
and 2 more SATA drives in the near future.

Thanks

Afraid not. Thats an older model that doesn't offer up enough amperage to the 12V rails. Its a good rule of thumb to not use any PSU thats over 3 years old on a newer system.

Now all that system needs is a good quality 450W PSU that offers about 28A or better on the 12V rails. Uless you plan to OC the system then you'll need something bigger.

I see. The new case I bought came with an Allied 500w power supply, which I heard is not a good brand, but will that PSU be safe to use at least for a few days until I get a new PSU? Also, what PSU would you recommend? Preferably something not too expensive.

Very, very few PSUs that are bundled with cases are worth a darn. Chances are that it doesn't offer more then 22A to 24A on the 12V rails. So it will not support your system at all. Just because it has a decent wattage doesn't mean its got that wattage going to all the right places. Chances are its an older model and falls under an older ATX spec where all the power is in the 5V rail and not the 12V rail where current systems need it. Just wait till you get a new PSU. If you don't that one could blow and kill your new parts.

Apevia= worst PSUs made.
Thermaltake= Tough Power series or nothing
OCZ= mediocer quality

Bottom line is you do not want to skimp on the PSU. The PSU better be on sale if its under $80. If you want go for the OCZ. It will serve you well. Just don't even think about a sub $50 PSU.

Thanks for the suggestions. I went with the OCZ still in the end, the reviews on newegg for it seem to be very good.

?????

NEVER go by Newegg reviews. They are full of people who don't know what they are talking about and say good things just because it turned on and ran without problems for a while. You need to look at real reviews.

Those are just a couple of the trusted PSU review sites. If either of them haven't reviewed it and passed it then chances are the unit wasn't worth looking at to start with.

Here are a couple of decent review of the OCZ model your looking at.

Like i said its a decent PSU, for its time. But what was good a year ago is mediocre by todays standards.
