Will this notebook be as fast as a desktop?

So I ordered a laptop so that I can work away from a desk a bit (working at a cafe or in a park for instance). I'm also thinking about building a new desktop PC for editing but, if this will really be as fast I wouldn't bother. Are laptop components up to their desktop counterparts? I was thinking that the HD might be a bottleneck (if it's 5400rpm or next) but I was thinking I could get a firewire hd. Anyways, here are the specs. Will it be basically comprobable to a pc? I would say that i'll just wait but delivery isn't until 10 days.

just to let you know that internal hard drive will be faster than that firewire drive. Firewire is only 400mb/s (unless its the 800 version) if you're going to get an external get a USB2 drive 480mb/s. A little faster but MUCH more versitile plus you can capture to it when you have your DV camera using your firewire port.

Edit: along these same lines... my boss thought that fire wire was faster than SCSI... I had to hold back from laughing in his face, it was pretty bad. Hes a mac user so I guess its understandable as hes definately brain washed.

USB 2.0 it is. Thanks! I was leaning that way but, you're right, a mac owning friend tried to convince me to go with F.W.

I think in any case its best to buy an enclosure and a regular drive...that way if you find out an external is useless at one point, you can pop it back into your pc and take advantage of the real speed it offers.

Firewire is better than USB 2.0 is doesn't use CPU cycles like USB. not to mention its transfer speeds are higher even though USB 2.0 is rated higher.

USB 2 is not faster than Firewire 400.

Correct, Firewire is definitely faster than USB2.0

And the laptop is not going to be as fast as a desktop. First of all, the HD is be a major bottleneck, unless you can the hitachi 7200rpm drive, it helps a bit. Second, the integrated video card will not allow you to run latested games smoothly

Aside from the HDD, performance will be simliar though..

I get disappointed when I hear people say USB 2.0 is faster than Firewire..

🙁
