Will this fry my CPU?

Hello all. I have a Soyo Dragon Plus! with a 1700+ CPU, and it has been freezing up a lot lately, but when I put in another 1700+ there are no freeze-ups. So I go to Frys to get a new CPU and they have an ECS/2200+ Thornton deal for the same price as just the CPU, so I get it. But I would rather keep my Soyo Board which is only rated to a 2100+ Palamino. What happens if I put the CPU in the Soyo and try it anyways?

Also, where can I get detailed instructions about unlocking the extra 256k cache?

Thanks - Jeff

I don't think it will hurt anything. It will either work or not. Your board may not have the multiplier support you need. If it does work, it will probably be reported as an "unkown processor" by the BIOS.

Which Dragon Plus! do you have, the K7V? That board supports XP's. Don't feel too bad, I am running an XP2500+ in a Soyo Dragon Platinum Edition. Underclocking is ridiculously easy.

Re-evaluate the two boards you have. I know that Soyos are classy compared to ECS but it may not be the best choice in this particular situation.:)

There are no bios drivers that will bump it up past 2100. OK, so I will pop it in and see what happens, but I think if it does not work on the Soyo, then I will just keep the ECS and sell the Soyo. Thanks. - Jeff
