I need a dual Opteron system ASAP for my office and need to keep it under $3000.

It will be used for 3D Max 7 and Quicktime video rendering.

So far I've decided on:

2x Opteron 246 CPU - $674 total
4x 512kb Corsair LP CM72SD512 for 2Gig total - 4x $73 ~ $292 - REGISTERED
Antec 550W True550-EPS12V PSU - $105
Thunder K8W (S2885) Motherboard - $419
Enlight Full Tower 8902 - $135
3DLabs Wildcat Realizm 100 256Meg DDR3 8x-AGP - $539
CD/DVD Combo - $50
Windows XP Pro - $156

Total: $2280. That leaves around $500 for Hard Drives.

I need help on hard drives. I need a lot of storage and have little experience with RAID Configs. Could you guys suggest a RAID config with at least 400GB total storage. Do I need a RAID controller and what kind of RAID (0,1,5, etc). Any other advice on the system would be great.

You could easily make use of the SATA RAID controller that's on board but this will only offer RAID 0,1,and 0+1.

If you were to use the onboard RAID a couple of large drives would work fine in RAID 0, double to 4 drives if using RAID 0+1.

Then select drives which offer the storage you need.

Anybody know if the Thunder K8W (S2885) Motherboard will support the dual core AMDs for future upgrading purposes?
